Therapy Options

Below are options for different types of therapy conducted by Dr. Mavis Milne. If you are ready to schedule an appointment or would like a free telephone consultation, please call (301) 565-0093 or complete the contact form.

Child & Family Therapy

Dr. Milne focuses on providing a warm and relaxed setting for children where they can feel comfortable and engaged in their own treatment process. Her training and experience in working with young people has resulted in a deep understanding of their particular needs in treatment. She approaches children using age-appropriate language and therapeutic techniques. Her work is grounded in developmental theory and emphasizes the use of cognitive-behavioral and family systems techniques as well as play therapy for young children. Therapy with children is often most effective when the adults who are most important to them are involved. Dr. Milne takes care to incorporate the family in this work, so that the child or adolescent can experience the adults in his or her life working together toward a common goal.

Adolescent & Adult Individual Therapy

Dr. Milne understands that, for many people, it is a new and foreign experience to share one's innermost thoughts with a stranger. She proceeds gently and with compassion as clients get comfortable and learn to enjoy having a space in which they are free to share their thoughts. Dr. Milne uses an eclectic approach to therapy, integrating a number of effective strategies in a way that best fits the needs of each client. She draws on her knowledge of development throughout the life-span, family systems and cognitive behavioral techniques. She helps individuals achieve a greater sense of well being by assisting them in recognizing and developing their own strengths, broadening their ways of coping, and gaining greater support in their relationships with others.

Couples Therapy

Dr. Milne has worked with couples who are preparing for a deeper commitment (such as marriage or a commitment ceremony), couples who are having frequent conflicts, and couples who are ending their relationship but want to do so with honesty and integrity. In many cases, couples therapy will begin with an assessment period in which the therapist meets with the couple together and then individually with each party. In a second meeting with the couple together, recommendations for treatment are provided. Dr. Milne is happy to consult to see if couples therapy would be a good match for you.
